Historical Evidence for Jesus Outside the Bible

Secular Writers
- Thalus (52 AD): One of the oldest secular writers who mentioned Jesus in his writings. Although Thalus’ work doesn’t exist anymore, Julius Africanus quoted his writing where he described a fearful darkness and an earthquake during Jesus’ crucifixion.
- Tacitus (56 to 120 AD): A well-known ancient historian who explained the existence of Jesus in his Annals of 116 AD. Tacitus described Emperor Nero’s response to the great fire in Rome and implicated Christians, mentioning that Jesus lived in Judea, was crucified under Pontius Pilate, and had followers.
Jewish Writings
- Mara Bar Serapion (70 AD): A Syrian philosopher who wrote for his son, comparing the life and persecution of Jesus with that of other philosophers who were persecuted for their ideas. Mara Bar Serapion called him the “wise king” and described the Jews as murdering their wise.
