Biblical Principles for Managing Stress and Anxiety
Introduction
Stress and anxiety are common experiences shared by many individuals throughout their lives. As Grace Believers, we may not admit to feeling stress, but it is important to acknowledge these feelings as human responses to challenging situations.
Understanding Stress: The Response, Not the Source
- Stress is a natural response to challenges and problems in our lives.
- The source of stress (the stressor) can vary – it may be social pressures, personal circumstances, or emotional upheavals.
- It’s not the stress that kills us, but our reaction to it. Stress vulnerability points are the areas where we might experience physical symptoms of stress (e.g., headaches, tension in the neck, stomach problems).

Biblical Principles for Dealing with Stress
- Trust in God: Proverbs 3:5-6 teaches us to trust in the Lord with all our heart and lean not on our own understanding, but acknowledge Him in all our ways, and He will make our paths straight.
- Prayer: Philippians 4:6 tells us not to be anxious about anything, but in every situation, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present our requests to God.
- Meditation on God’s Word: Joshua 1:8 instructs us to meditate on it day and night, so that we may be careful to do according to all that is written in it. This practice can help us keep our focus on God and His promises.

Conclusion
Stress and anxiety may be a part of our lives, but we can find solace in the Bible’s teachings. By trusting in God, praying, and meditating on His Word, we can manage stress effectively and maintain a strong connection with Him.
